|The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is a global leader in the fight against pediatric HIV and AIDS, working in 16 countries and at over 5,000 sites around the world to prevent the transmission of HIV to children, and to help those already infected. Today, because of the highly successful work of the Foundation and its partners, pediatric AIDS has been virtually eliminated in the United States. Job SummaryThe Research Director is responsible for managing and ensuring the technical quality of the research and evaluation portfolio of the organization. He/she provides strategic leadership and oversight of the clinical, implementation, operations, and program effectiveness research conducted by EGPAF/Mozambique, in close coordination with the Technical and Strategic Information (SI) teams. The Research Director will directly contribute to generation of a strong evidence base to improve the effective delivery of quality programs to further the mission of EGPAF/Mozambique, improving the lives of Mozambicans infected and affected by HIV. The Director of Research is a senior management position reporting directly to the Country Director. The Director is expected to play a large and important role in providing leadership to carry out research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigor. Job Responsibilities Works collaboratively across the organization, and especially within the clinical division, to develop a comprehensive research agenda and to ensure that research results are translated into timely and valuable content for programs;Oversees the development and implementation of high-quality primary and secondary research designed to enhance the effectiveness and impact of the Foundation programs;Ensures the highest quality scientific, ethical and regulatory standards for all research activitiesOversees the dissemination and promotion of the Foundation research outcomes through relevant channels in liaison with the Communications and Advocacy unit, and assists the Foundation and partners in understanding and using research findings;Keeps regular contact via monthly conference calls with US-based headquarters research staff to update on the progress of evaluations;Develops and oversees partnerships that expand the Foundation’s ability to conduct and disseminate research of importance to the Foundation;Supervises research staff who report directly to this position and oversees hiring, ongoing coaching , feedback and support to build their capacity to further the mission of the Foundation;Develop and oversee budgets and policies and procedures for the Research Directorate;Contributes to capacity building of EGPAF staff and Fellows, partners, and MOH personnel in the conduct of research/evaluations through trainings, mentoring, and sharing/review of relevant scientific literature and other relevant sources and materials;Participates in preparation of study reports, abstracts and manuscripts and dissemination of results at local, National and International levels;Provides technical leadership to EGPAF/Mozambique by building a strategic portfolio of operations research and program evaluations that advance the evidence base for EGPAF programs;Collaborate with EGPAF Global Research team and research teams across EGPAF programs to leverage global expertise, share experiences, and facilitate multi-country research activities;Strengthen local capacity of the national health institutions and partners to carry out high-quality research including building partnerships with those institutions to advance EGPAF´s research agenda;Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Academic BackgroundMD, PhD or similar advanced degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Maternal Child Health, Public Health or HIV related sciences;Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in health research and evaluation in developing countries, including study design, protocol development, data collection, data analysis, and scientific publication;5+ years’ experience managing multiple personnel, including providing oversight, mentoring, and support;Experience in maternal and child health and/or HIV/AIDS and TB research;Well published in peer reviewed journals will be an added advantage. Experience and KnowledgeEssentialHealth background (Knowledge and understanding of HIV prevention of mother to child transmission, maternal and child health , HIV care and treatment and TB);Eight or more years in research administration of research activities;Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated experience with research methodologies required, including demonstrated ability to identify, collect, integrate, analyze, interpret and summarize a variety of quantitative and qualitative information. DesirableAcademic credibility with a track record of active, high quality research and of leading research projects;Experience with state-of-the-art techniques in impact evaluations and proficiency in quantitative statistical analysis, with demonstrated experience in one or more of these software’s: Stata, SPSS and SAS. Skills and abilitiesAbility to think and act strategically, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple projects;Ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of research and how research results can be delivered to partners and a wider scientific community;Excellent inter-personal and communications skills;Team player who can also work independently;Strong written and oral communication skills in Portuguese and English, able to communicate and influence a wide range of professionals from different organizations and backgrounds;A proven ability to manage a large and complex workload, working at times to short deadlines;Experience developing research protocols for IRB review and managing IRB correspondence and requirements nationally and internationally. Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time position and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday 7:30am to 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.|
